As a follow-up to last weeks’ SPA Moment (not to be confused with a senior moment) – one more thing that needs to be added to a patient data base – MCS – muscle condition scoring or lean body mass. There is a great resource through WSAVA:
that includes BCS and MCS for dogs and cats. As pets age, they (especially cats) may lose weight, but they may maintain weight and fat. While there is a ‘typical’ loss of lean body mass as an aging process, assessing their muscle condition is critical as it can be an indicator of significant disease.
